When a Seat Affects Health

This often happens when sitting for long periods: the shoulders and neck become stiff, the lower abdomen feels tense, and you start to feel fatigued. This is when a good seat and proper posture can make all the difference.

The Risks of Leading a Sedentary Life

Between beds, chairs, armchairs, and sofas, the risk of living a fairly sedentary life is always around the corner. Moreover, it is estimated that 8 out of 10 workers tend to work seated, often maintaining the same position for many hours in a row. While it may not be easy to notice the consequences of a poor posture with crossed legs, a curved back, and a forward-leaning neck in the short term, after a few months the first problems begin to appear. Spending hours and hours seated in a correct position is the only way to prevent health issues, more or less serious, such as those outlined below.

Obesity. Some disorders, such as metabolic syndrome, alter metabolism and can cause weight gain. Digestion slows down, making it really difficult to process what we consume.

Poor circulation. You may feel heavy, tired legs, swollen ankles, and, more generally, a pulsating sensation in the lower body—this is a clear warning sign.

Slowed brain functions. Generally, the longer you sit, the more fatigued you feel, with a heavy head. Being even uncomfortable further clouds the mind, reducing concentration and productivity.

Joint and muscle pain. Often, the weakest areas are the legs, glutes, and hips—parts of the body that are not activated while seated.

Additionally, several studies show that spending most of the time seated also negatively affects mood, leading to feelings of tiredness and fatigue. While having a good seat is important, the secret to avoiding physical fatigue is to take frequent breaks: every 2 hours, or if possible every hour, it is very useful to stand up and walk for 5 minutes before resuming your activities.

Even an hour of exercise or a simple walk of at least 30 minutes a day can make a difference. The key is to keep the body active, preventing seated positions from causing stiffness and tension in the back or arms.

How to Choose a Good Seat

The keyword is ergonomics: a set of principles that allow the creation of products that are beautiful, efficient, and capable of providing well-being to those who use them. Seats today are designed to be as comfortable as possible while maintaining a refined and elegant design.

Whether it’s office chairs, small sofas, or stools, each product has various features that make it ergonomic and comfortable: soft padding or rigid structure, fabric or leather covering, static or adjustable, with feet or wheels. Among the offerings from our company Sem, there are several interesting models designed to meet every need: the structure and shapes of our products are created to promote a correct posture, and the presence of armrests and headrests helps provide support and evenly distribute body weight.

Sem offers products ranging from office chairs to stools, as well as small sofas and armchairs. Among the managerial seating models, Grid is an executive chair available in padded or mesh versions, appreciated for the strong support it provides to the body, especially the back, thanks to the lumbar support in the lower back area. Similar to Grid, one of Sem’s most comfortable operational chairs is Cometa, designed as the perfect combination of comfort and practicality. This seat also offers lumbar support on the backrest, and it is possible to choose whether to include its headrest for cervical support.

Our Sem products are designed to offer an ergonomic seating experience that promotes the well-being of those seated. Contact us to discover our products, or visit our showroom.
